Simple Tips for Saving Energy

Little things can make a big difference when it comes to saving energy, according to reporter Stacy Johnson. Learn more about simple energy conservation at home:

Cut Back on Heating Costs

As winter rages on and another polar vortex threatens the United States, families can benefit greatly from learning a bit about heating and ways to conserve energy at home. Home Energy Saver recently shared this infographic in an effort to boost awareness and support energy conservation:

The City of Tallahassee Utility Services recently offered summer energy saving tips for every household. Here are the top ten:

  • Close shades, drapes and blinds during the day

  • Use a microwave instead of the range/oven
  • Keep windows and doors closed while air conditioning
  • Change the air conditioner’s air filter monthly during heavy use
  • Arrange items in your refrigerator for quick removal and return

Efficient Energy Saving with Energy Star

Becoming more energy-efficient is a great way of helping the environment and reducing bills.  One way of doing this is ensuring home appliances are replaced at the right time – not too early when they don’t require replacement – and not too late, when they are well past their efficiency date. The average yearly energy bill – whether with IDT Energy or any other utility service provider – is approximately $2,200.  About 13 percent of that figure goes on large appliances (not including electronics).

It is also advisable to trade in old appliances that are no longer using energy efficiently, with new ones that have the Energy Star certification. These help to boost both energy and financial savings and are kind to the environment.  By swapping a washing machine that predates 1994, with an Energy Star-rated model, a family can save $110 in their yearly energy costs. So it makes sense to keep an eye on appliances and their efficiency.

A Creative Approach to Heating

Conserving energy in the winter can be a difficult task, since space heaters often require vast amounts of electricity to run. The higher the thermostat, the higher the costs.

This video presents a unique approach to heating, which focuses on heating the person instead of the entire room.

Enhancing Energy Efficiency

It is always a good idea to seek out new ways of improving energy efficiency.  Irrespective of what utility provider one uses – IDT Energy or any of the others – saving money on utility bills is always attractive.  So the recent news of the availability of more efficient air conditioners, should make for happy budget-conscious individuals.  In addition, apart from saving one money, it can also make for a more comfortable environment; reduce greenhouse gasses and the impacts of climate change; and can even increase the value of one’s property.

Indeed, keeping an older air conditioning system, can actually cost one an additional $100+.  So it might be worth either replacing it, or looking at the newer models that boast greater efficiency.
