Programmable thermostats are a good way to save on your IDT Energy bills.  While it may initially seem like a pricey investment, it seems that research has proven it can pay for itself within a year.  So how is it meant to be used to ensure it is most efficient?  The most important thing to do is to use it consistently.  If not, then one will not reap the conservation benefits.

Make sure the thermostat has four pre-programmed temperature settings.  This ensures one’s home or office stays at the correct temperature needed for different times of the day.  This is the main benefit of having this type of thermostat.  Some models even allow for different temperature setting on different days of the week (maybe some days one is at home a lot and other days, not so much).  For example, setting a furnace for a short time before one arrives home, provides for a warm and cozy homecoming, without getting a high utility bill at the end of the month.

It should not be so difficult for everyone to take on a few new habits to save on their IDT Energy bills.  By making a few minor modifications, anyone can transform their energy-zapping homes into one of conservation. It’s the little steps that add up to the major savings.

Here are a few ideas.  First, reduce the water spout as much as possible, especially during the warmer months.  Remember:  this can often utilize up to 50 percent of the entire electricity in the household.  Second, ensure windows are closed tightly during both the summer (when air-conditioning  is used) and the winter (when expenses are going on the heating system).  This prevents against air leaks.  Third, unplug any appliances when not in use, as leaving them in the socket – even when turned off – draws unnecessary power.

Another way to easily save on utility bills is to use appliances that take less – rather than more – energy.  When you absolutely have to use the energy-zapping appliances however, limit your time with them.  For example, the microwave and slow cooker are way more energy-efficient than the oven.  The rule of thumb is:  the bigger the appliance, the bigger the utility bill. Also, only fill up the kettle for what you need.

In addition, when using the washing machine, wherever possible, do a cycle on cold water as this will save up to 40 percent of energy that is used for heating water.  As well, it helps maintain the quality of the clothing, reducing wear and tear. Of course, towels, bed linen and heavily soiled garments do require hot water for washing, but most other items do not.  During the summer months, hang clothes out to dry rather than using the dryer.

These are just a few very simple, easy-to-implement tips, but they can make the world of difference when it comes to paying your utility bill.

If you want to save money on your IDT Energy bills, it is worth looking into what’s new on the market vis-à-vis energy-saving techniques and devices.  One of the most recent innovations has come from Enlighted, a CA-based start-up company that has distributed sensor-based lighting controls which it claims can reduce energy used from lighting by approximately 60 percent.  It seems that soon enough this new lighting technology will be placed in offices in the form of overhead lights.

Already, large, successful businesses like Google are reaping the benefits from this lighting energy, enjoying tremendous savings.  The device does, however, take around two years to see a return on one’s investment, but it is clearly worth it in the long run.  In the future, Enlighted will also be designing better controls resulting in even greater efficiency for light sources.

As we started the new year, the Energy Independence and Security Act (2007) came into effect which requires general-purpose light bulbs to be 30 percent more efficient.  This law will begin with 100-watt bulbs and then, by the end of January 2014, 40-watt bulbs will be included in the edict for improved standards.  According to the country’s Energy Department, “the new energy-saving light bulbs could save you about $50 per year when you replace 15 traditional incandescent bulbs in your home.”

First, get your home and office a programmable thermostat that can significantly reduce heating costs – in some cases up to 10 percent.  When in the premises, it should be set at 20 C, but when sleeping our out of the house, this can be reduced to 18 C.

A seemingly obvious piece of advice (but one that is all-too-often missed) is to ensure your property is well insulated and protected against drafts.  One easy way of doing this is to put in weatherstrip around doors, attic openings and air conditioning units.  This can lead to a saving on around 30 percent of heating costs.  As well, if the filter in the furnace is replaced every month and serviced professionally annually to ensure maximum running capacity, substantial energy savings will be made.

To save money on energy, if you use it during off-peak (i.e. cheaper) hours you could save money. If you are wondering how to do that without it impacting your life, think about the different times you can run your washer, dryer and dishwasher (it makes no difference to you if it’s on in the middle of the night, except for the financial savings you will enjoy).
