IDT Energy Offers Some Energy Saving Tips from the DOE

Programmable thermostats can help save energy

Programmable thermostats can help save energy

The US Department of Energy has a wonderful, concise booklet to help consumers save on their energy bill throughout the year. Saving energy is not only good for the individuals and families by helping them save money, it is also beneficial to the country as a whole. As the DOE puts it,

“Saving energy reduces our nation’s overall demand for resources needed to make energy, and increasing your energy efficiency is like adding another clean energy source to our electric power grid.”

Here are just a small number of suggestions to help people save on their electric bill, which IDT Energy supports:

  • Have a programmable thermostat installed to run heating and cooling systems more efficiently.
  • Don’t use your dishwasher’s drying cycle; just let the air dry off your clean dishes.
  • Remember to turn off appliances when not in use
  • Even better, unplug your appliances when not in use to save on “ghost” electric usage. You can have a number of appliance all plugged into a power strip which can be turned off, making this task easier.
  • Lowering the thermostat on your hot water heater down to 120°F keeps your water hot enough, but can save lots of energy.

The DOE has lots more tips and suggestions for saving energy. It’s good for you and its good for our community.

IDT Energy is an ESCO

ESCOs Help Consumers Save

ESCO stands for “Energy Service Company.” When the power supply utility companies in New York were deregulated, ESCOs, including IDT Energy, came into being. Competition was introduced into an area which was essentially populated with monopolies which had government protection as well as regulation.

With deregulation came the competition which allowed prices, and services to bring in customers, hopefully encouraging the quality of services provided as well as helping to keep costs competitive.

Under this system energy service is divided into two parts, the supply of energy and its delivery. IDT Energy offers a “Switch and Save” program which allows consumers to choose IDT Energy as their supplier, while their local utility, such as Con Edison, remains in charge of power delivery.

Consumers are not compelled to switch to an ESCO, but in many cases, as when switching to IDT Energy, it is possible to save money on the monthly bill for electricity and natural gas.

IDT Energy Suggests Switching to CFLs to Save

On October 22 1879 Thomas Alva Edison had his first successful test of his invention that literally changed the world and the way we live in it, that is of course the electric light bulb. The basic design of the incandescent light bulb has changed little in all this time but today, with our increased awareness of the importance of saving energy, especially electricity, there is a concerted effort to change from the general use of incandescent bulbs to compact fluorescent light bulbs, or CFLs.

The technology for a long lasting and energy efficient fluorescent light bulb was developed by Philips in 1991 when it created a fluorescent light bulb which burned for 60,000 hours using magnetic induction.

IDT Energy suggests to consumers that they consider making the switch to CFLs in their homes and workplaces. There are several good reasons to do this:

• CFLs can last up to ten times longer
• CFLs use only a quarter of the energy
• CFLs produce about 90% less heat than incandescents while at the same time producing more light per watt.

Saving Energy: A Family Effort

Many people are aware of the fact that they can save money by cutting back on energy use. The problem usually is that they are not aware of how. The internet is a great source of knowledge, and information and tips can easily be found using Google or another search engine. For personalized advice, you may want to contact your electric company, like IDT Energy.

Once you’ve learned about the various ways to conserve energy in your house, have a family meeting and explain the proper use of appliances to your children. Make sure they understand why they should make an effort- give them real examples of costs, and show them how simple it is to be a little more responsible. IDT Energy: Laundry Savings Tips

Companies such as IDT Energy know that by introducing a few new habits into your everyday routine, you can easily lower the amount of energy that you use, as well as your electricity bill. Your laundering habits are a good example of such an opportunity. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Do your wash with cold water whenever possible.
  • Be sure to only run full loads, to maximize efficiency.
  • Make sure you don’t overload your dryer. This will cause the dryer to use more energy, and require more time to run. Clothes will also wrinkle and get worn out.
  • For maximum efficiency, use suds savers and front-loading washers.
  • Always adjust the water level according to the load size. This way, you will use less on smaller loads.
  • Overloaded washers don’t clean clothes as effectively, and often requires another cycle.
  • Make sure to clean the lint filter after each drying cycle to maintain efficiency.

Stay Warm for Less with IDT Energy

Have you noticed that winter has arrived? Well of course you have, and so has IDT Energy. It’s time to discuss some great ways to save money during the high energy consuming winter months.

IDT Energy can’t emphasize enough some of the following suggestions which can help you save a lot of money on your power bill during this cold, dark time of year.

  1. Don’t delay insulating your home. Cover everything, from the walls, floors, heating ducts and don’t forget the ceilings and attic access. Basement trapdoors also need attention.
  2. Have you ever noticed how cold your glass windows get, especially at night? Cover those windows with shutters, drapes or clear plastic to keep the cold air out and warm air in.
  3. Put caulk around doors and windows. Check for cracks and holes in window and door frames, too, and plug them all up.

Hot Water Savings Tips

Now that winter is here, the energy costs are likely climbing due to use of heat, hot water, and more. Companies like IDT Energy would agree that not all of the costs are necessary; you can cut back slightly on your bills if you follow these few tips:

1.       Although you want nothing more than to relax in a hot, steaming bath after a cold winter day, doing so will cost you more for both the heating of the water, and the water itself. Showers use up less hot water than do baths.

2.       Install an aerator to the end of your shower head to reduce water flow by up to half. Also, make sure to turn the faucet all the way off when you are done using them.

3.       Don’t bother mopping and cleaning the house with hot water. Save the hot water for your showers, and lower your heating bill. Your house will look and feel clean even if you use soap with cold water.

Winter Energy Saving Tips: IDT Energy

Winter is arriving rapidly, and it is a little known fact that the cold weather can greatly affect your electricity bill. Companies such as IDT Energy can testify to the fact that proper use of appliances and a few quick home repairs can make this season much less expensive.

First, get a programmable thermostat. Used properly, it can reduce temperature regulation costs by up to 10%. Set it at 20?C during the day and 18 when you’re sleeping or away. Second, regularly check the weather- stripping throughout your house. Drafts can increase your energy use by up to 30%. The winter months tend to be darker, and so more electric light is used throughout the daylight hours. Switch your incandescent light bulbs with fluorescent ones, as they use less energy and last longer. Lastly, make sure to close the doors to all the rooms that are not being used, as well as closets. The heat is easily wasted.
